UtahSAINT 2011 Windows Security

[THIS DOCUMENT IS PART OF A LARGE WINDOWS SECURITY TUTORIAL]

UtahSAINT 2011 Conference will have two major trainings on Windows Security.

All participants will need to sign up for Evaluation versions of Windows 2008 R2 Server and Windows 7 Enterprise.  These evaluation copies will need to be loaded onto VMWare Fusion, Workstation or other equivalent that will allow running more than one virtual machine at a time.  (VMWare Player will not work)  Participants will install Windows 2008 R2 Server on a virtual machine and use it to enforce security on the Windows 7 virtual machine.

The following steps should be completed BEFORE attending the conference.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE TO THESE MACHINES BEYOND WHAT IS LISTED BELOW.

(FYI, These Instructions were built for VMWare Fusion 4, other versions of VMWare Fusion & Workstation should be similar)

1. Install Windows 2008 R2 Server 90 day Evaluation

"Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Evaluation (Full Edition).exe 1.0 GB"   (just the one file, and the file is actually 2.0 GB)

Once your file has been downloaded, start up VMWare Fusion.  From the top menu, choose "File" -> "Import".  Choose the file you just downloaded.  Then click on "Import".  A box will pop up "Ready to import", click on "Start Import"

If you can't find a import option, you can also use this tool: http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/
You will need to extract the VHD out of the exe file first with Converter, but it will work as well.

Wait a while ;)

Once the machine has imported, go ahead and start it up.

Login with, Username: administrator, password: Pass@word1

Change the password, but don't forget it!  You might want to put the password in the VM notes.

Install all available updates and shut it down.

2. Install Windows 7 Enterprise 90 day Evaluation

Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc442495 and select the download for the 64bit version of Windows 7 Enterprise.  Click on "Get Started Now"

Login with your Windows Live login. (If you don't have one, make one)

It will ask you for a bunch of Personal info, you will need to fill it out.

It will have you confirm your email address

After this and that, it should start downloading a Windows 7 Enterprise ISO

(You do not need a product key, it will be embedded in the download)

Create a new virtual machine, by clicking on "New"

Choose "Continue without Disk"

Select a Disk Image, and choose the ISO file you downloaded

Fill out the "Easy Install" information, and leave the Product Key blank.

Name the machine.

And wait a while ;)

***IMPORTANT UPDATE***

Windows Remote Administration Tools: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7887

Go to the Control Panel, select Programs.

Select "Turn Windows Features on or off"

Check the Box next to "Group Policy Management Tools" under Remote Administration Tools -> Feature Administration Tools

Click "OK"

Follow the screen shots:

The program is now installed, and will launch.

The first task it will perform is to import all the baselines.

If it asks you to download updates, hit 'Cancel' for the purposes of this training.

Later down the road you will want to use this feature... (When they fix it)
